Treatment

Today a number of different treatment methods are available for excessive sweating.

Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants are the most common form of treatment for people who suffer from excessive sweating. They decrease the production of perspiration in the sweat glands. The duration of effect depends on the efficacy of the product. Today PerspireX is considered one of the most effective means of treating problem perspiration. Tests show that PerspireX reduces perspiration by 65-70% for at least 72 hours after each application.

Iontoforesis
Iontoforesis is a process where an ion current of 15-20mA is run through the patient's hands and feet, immersed in a bowl of water or another kind of transmission media.

After 3-4 treatments of each 15-20 minutes, the patient can achieve reduced perspiration for a couple of weeks. This effect is most likely caused by the fact that the channels of the sweat glands become clogged with keratin during the treatment.

Botox
Botulinum toxin A is a neurotoxin injected intradermally and acts to inhibit the release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction and from sympathetic nerves that innervate eccrine sweat glands which results in loss of sweating. The effect normally lasts several months. The injections are painful and require a nerve block for anaesthesia.

Surgery
Surgical removal of the sweat glands is only performed in very severe cases. It is usually performed in the armpits, but also severe hand and foot perspiration can be stopped surgically.
